The landscape around Miradouro da Baía do Mosteiro showcases one of the most impressive reminders of Flores’ volcanic origins. Huge walls of exposed columnar basalt rise above the lush vegetation, creating an almost architectural pattern across the mountainside.

These formations developed as volcanic lava slowly cooled and contracted, naturally fracturing into the characteristic vertical columns visible in the cliffs. What makes this location particularly striking is the contrast: geometric basalt formations surrounded by the intensely green, seemingly chaotic vegetation that Flores is famous for.

A telephoto lens works particularly well here. Instead of trying to capture the entire landscape with an ultra-wide lens, use a longer focal length to compress the road, vegetation and enormous basalt cliffs into a single frame.

The road itself creates a perfect leading line toward the mountains, while the vertical basalt columns add texture to the background. Waiting for directional light can make a huge difference: low sunlight hitting the cliffs from the side emphasizes their individual ridges and reveals considerably more detail in the rock.

A vertical composition is especially effective because it allows the road to occupy the foreground while still communicating the height of the mountains above.

Miradouro da Baía do Mosteiro is located on Flores, near the small settlement of Mosteiro on the island's western side. The surrounding roads offer several impressive perspectives toward the steep volcanic mountains and their exposed basalt formations.

This is also one of those locations where the drive itself is part of the experience. Rather than concentrating exclusively on the official viewpoint, keep an eye on the surrounding landscape as you travel through the area—some of the strongest compositions can be found directly along the road.

If you stop for photographs, make sure your vehicle is completely off the roadway and choose a position with good visibility in both directions.
