Portugal Miradouro do Pico do Ferro

The Pico do Ferro Viewpoint is one of the most visited viewpoints on São Miguel Island. In fact, it could be said to be the most famous in the area for its incredible views, from the heights, of Lagoa das Furnas. From this viewpoint, you can also enjoy views of the Caldeiras, located just below, on the shores of the lagoon.



The Pico do Ferro Viewpoint is located at an altitude of 570 meters above sea level. It can be easily reached by car, but for those who are up for a walk, there's also a hiking trail that starts in the Caldeiras area. This trail is approximately 4.8 km long and is considered somewhat difficult because there is quite a steep incline if you start from the Caldeiras (441 m).

To avoid the steep climb, you can choose to hike the trail in the opposite direction, from Pico do Ferro Viewpoint to the Caldeiras, and then return by taxi. Although it's a challenging route, it's quite popular among people visiting the area, and you're likely to encounter other hikers.

Chase the Fog: While clear blue skies are nice, the valley shines photographically when the low-hanging clouds and sea mists roll in over the mountains. Dark, moody compositions accentuating the deep volcanic greens feel uniquely authentic to the Azores. And there is always a chance of capturing a rainbow.
