Portugal Chapel of the Shells, Alcáçovas
The Church of Our Lady of Conception in Alcáçovas looks quite plain from the outside, but the interior is a different matter – thousands of sea shells from three oceans were carefully arranged to form ornate Rococo patterns, probably in the 17th or 18th century, on the walls and ceilings of the interior and also on the walls of the adjoining garden.
If you’re in Evora and you enjoy the Chapel of Bones, this Chapel of Shells might also appeal.

Travel Information
The village of Alcáçovas is an easy drive from Evora and your navigation app will take you down the side street to the chapel. Usually, the chapel is closed, but through the small door on the building across the road from it, you’ll find an information desk. Ask the lady on the desk to let you in. On our visit, the lady was also able to explain a bit of the chapel’s history.
