The mud volcanoes (Vulcanii Noroiosi) near Berca, northwest of Buzău in Muntenia / Great Wallachia are among Romania's most famous geological and scenic attractions. The road leading there from the south is properly paved but in poor condition. Like other roads in the area, it has sinkholes and faults. Obviously, the earth is in motion here.
There are only three or four mud volcanoes "at work" here at the larger ones (Pâclele Mari, about three kilometres away from the smaller Pâclele Mici), but they have created a larger volcanic cone with more ejected volume. At intervals of less than a day, you can observe a clear change in the cone here due to ejected mud.
Gases rising from a depth of about 3,000 m through layers containing clay and water cause this "cold volcanism".
