Singapore Parkview Square (aka. the Gotham Building)

This building is a 200-meter-tall gargoyle-encrusted fantasia that catered to the whims of the Taiwanese tycoon who financed its construction. The locally used nickname is the Gotham Building because it resembles the architecture of the fictional city of Batman fame. The giant foyer is covered with Art Deco murals and features a unique bar with a two-storey gin tower. The building itself houses offices and several smaller embassies in Singapore.

In the courtyard, behind the building, bronzes include Salvador Dali’s Snail Queen and his Naked Woman Climbing A Staircase. Fernando Botero’s, Dressed Woman stands between them. In the centre is a golden crane on a stand that features a brief narrative in Chinese characters.

Atlas holding a large mirror ball appears at the vehicle entrance. Smaller Atlases appear elsewhere on, and inside, the building.

Photography Tips

At the available angles, a super wide angle lens (fisheye) is required to capture the entirety of the building from ground level in the courtyard. For this image, an 8-15mm fisheye lens was used at 10mm with lens distortion correction applied in the post to compensate for the extreme barrelling effect of the lens.
It is also worth looking at the other side of the building - the setting and photo potential are very different.

Travel Information

Parkview Square is in the centre of town and easily reached by subway from Bugis Station (exit E or F will bring you up beside it). It is located behind Raffles Hospital. Parking is available at the hospital although it is expensive.
