South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Shag Rocks, South Georgia

The Shag Rocks are a remote and dramatic group of jagged islets rising sharply from the South Atlantic Ocean, northwest of South Georgia. Known for their steep, needle-like formations, they are often battered by strong winds, heavy swells, and rough seas, making navigation in this area particularly challenging.

Despite their harsh conditions, the rocks serve as an important resting and breeding spot for seabirds like shags and albatrosses, giving the formation its name and adding life to an otherwise wild and exposed maritime landscape.

Photography Tips

It's often rainy and windy here, so take care on your camera equipment and save it with a rope and microfiber cleaning cloth.

If you want to shoot the birds you need to have at least a shutter of 1/1000. If the picture is to dark push the ISO a bit up.

Travel Information

You only can reach these rocks by expedition boat on your way between Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Your captain will let you know about the arrival time from the bridge and you potentially have around 10-15 min shooting time here.
