South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Kind penguin in front of Bayard wreck, Ocean Harbour
Ocean Harbour is one of the most atmospheric abandoned whaling sites on South Georgia, where rusting relics quietly tell the story of the island’s industrial past. The most striking sight is the wreck of the Bayard, a steel sailing ship left to decay in the shallow waters, now framed by towering mountains and ever-changing light. Today, nature has reclaimed the area—fur seals rest along the shore while seabirds circle above, creating a powerful contrast between history and wilderness.
Photography Tips
Look for wildlife that you can place in front of the shipwreck. It symbolizes the spot itself and is therefore very meaningful.
Especially if a spot interests you, you should allow a little more time and wait until the right wildlife looks in your direction or moves toward you.
Always keep a respectful distance from wildlife and try to be patient.
