South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Petrol Shipwreck Grytviken

The Second old Shipwreck of Grytviken is behind the bigger barrels more on the south side of the old whaling station. The rusting remains of the Petrel (shipwreck) lie half-submerged in the waters of Grytviken, a haunting relic of the island’s whaling era.

If it has rained before, you can find small little puddles to create reflections. Go low for that, even sometimes the smallest puddles are enough.

Reaching Grytviken is only possible by expedition cruise, usually departing from Ushuaia, with landings depending on weather and sea conditions. Visitors must follow strict environmental guidelines set by the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands to protect the fragile ecosystem. There are no permanent residents or facilities, so all logistics, including food and accommodation, are provided on board the ship.
