South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Penguin Portraits, St Andrew´s Bay
St. Andrews Bay is one of the most spectacular wildlife sites in South Georgia Island, known for its enormous king penguin colony and dramatic glacier-backed beaches. It is home to hundreds of thousands of breeding king penguins, along with elephant seals and seabirds, creating one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in the Southern Ocean.
Photography Tips
When you have a portrait lens, bring it with you. With these powerful, wide open shutter lenses, you can take beautiful portraits since wildlife here is as close as that sometimes you dont need a longer lens! Open your aperture wide open to create beautiful separations.
Travel Information
St. Andrews Bay is located on the remote island of South Georgia Island and can only be visited as part of an organized expedition cruise, as there are no airports or independent travel options. The best travel window is the austral summer (roughly November to March), when sea conditions are more navigable and wildlife is at its peak. From Ushuaia, this voyage to reach South Georgia takes approximately 3 full days.
