South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Gold Harbour (Overview)

  • Please log in or sign up for free to see the GPS coordinates & weather for this photo spot
Gold Harbour is one of the most iconic wildlife landing sites on South Georgia Island, famous for its dramatic backdrop of hanging glaciers and steep mountains. At its southern Bay, you have small little beaches with dramatic backdrops.

Photography Tips

Try to get as low in a position as you can to have some blurry foreground, even though seeing the structure of the water. Decide on the composition based on the drama in the sky and what's more interesting.

Travel Information

Travel to Gold Harbour is only possible via expedition cruise ships, as there are no airports or permanent settlements on South Georgia Island. Most voyages depart from Ushuaia or occasionally the Falkland Islands, crossing the often rough Southern Ocean. Visitors can only go ashore with guided landings during the austral summer, when weather and sea conditions are most favorable.
