Spain Ports de Serrans
I introduce the Torres de Serranos as Valencia’s best-preserved medieval gate. Builders raise it between 1392 and 1398 under the master mason Pere Balaguer, and it serves as a ceremonial entrance for visiting royals and dignitaries. In later centuries it doubles as a prison for nobles, and during the Spanish Civil War it protects artworks from the Prado behind walls padded with sandbags. Today it anchors the edge of the old town by the Turia gardens and welcomes visitors to climb for city views.
Architecturally, the gate embodies Valencian Gothic. Two vast polygonal towers flank a deep central arch, crowned by crenellations and bold machicolations (those stone brackets that allow defenders to drop projectiles). A carved frieze runs above the portal, and ramps and stairways lead to open terraces with commanding sightlines. The robust limestone catches warm light beautifully and shows crisp detail in the stonework.

Photography Tips
Catch golden hour to make the limestone glow and deepen shadows under the machicolations.
This monument rewards photographers all day. I frame a symmetrical, full-height shot from Plaça dels Furs to emphasise the twin-tower power. I step to either side to reveal depth, shadows under the machicolations, and the sculpted frieze. Golden hour light warms the stone; blue hour invites long exposures with traffic trails sweeping past the arch. From the Turia riverbed park or the Serranos bridge, I capture the towers rising above greenery. Inside, I shoot upward along stairwells and ramparts, or outward for skyline panoramas. A polarising filter deepens the sky and tames glare; a short telephoto isolates carvings; including pedestrians adds scale. On windy days, the Valencian flag atop the tower gives a lively finishing touch.
