The San Telmo lighthouse is located at the exit from Almería, past the Bayana tunnel. It has a privileged location for taking panoramic shots not only of the city but of the entire bay. The first end of the port with the Alcazaba in the background is truly iconic. During the blue hour, the lighting of the two tunnels leading out of the city gives it a truly spectacular appearance.
This viewpoint offers one of the most comprehensive and spectacular panoramic views of Almería. The perspective from this point is unique because it allows you to take in the entire city in a single glance, perfectly understanding its geography and history.

The photo captures the essence of the capital:

Foreground: The hamlet of the La Chanca Pescadería neighborhood, with its characteristic white and ochre cave houses stacked on the hillside, reflecting the city's more traditional and humble origins.

Center: The silhouette of the Cathedral-Fortress of Almería (Santa María de la Encarnación), which dominates the panorama with its fortress-like appearance, recalling its past as a defense against Barbary pirates.

In the background: The Bay of Almería, the Marina and Commercial Port, and the Promenade (Nicolás Salmerón Park), showcasing the modern and Mediterranean side of the city.

The context: Surrounding everything is the semi-desert landscape and the mountain walls (Jayrán), which frame the city, recalling its Moorish heritage.

The meaning of this view is profound: it is a visual journey through the layers of Almería's history, from its Moorish and fishing origins to its modern development, all nestled between the sea and the mountains.

Photography Tips

Ideal moment:

Sunrise: The light of dawn illuminates the facade of the Cathedral and the white facades of La Chanca in a golden glow, while the city is still calm.

Sunset and Blue Hour: Without a doubt, the best moment. The sun sets behind the city, creating a lateral, golden light. Then, during the "blue hour," the city lights gradually turn on, the sky takes on an intense blue hue, and a magical atmosphere is created. It's ideal for long-exposure photos.

Composition:

Wide-angle: Essential for capturing the immensity of the panorama, from La Chanca in the foreground to the sea in the background.

Telephoto: Perfect for isolating details such as the Cathedral, the cables of the ships in the harbor, or the windows of the caves of La Chanca.

Leading Lines: Use the line of the road and the curve of the bay to guide your eye through the image.

Technique:

Tripod: Essential for shooting at sunrise, sunset, or during the blue hour with slow shutter speeds. It's also key for panoramas or HDR shots that capture the full dynamic range of the scene (from mountain shadows to city lights).

Polarizing filter: Can help reduce reflections and enhance the blue of the sky and sea.

Travel Information

The best way to get there is by car, which you can park at the gas station at the foot of the mound where the lighthouse is located. You have to climb some stone steps to reach the lighthouse. The lighthouse is closed, but you can take photos from the top of the steps.
