The Sun of Portocarrero is a heraldic shield carved in stone that adorns the façade of Almería Cathedral, in the historic heart of the city. This symbol represents a radiant sun surrounded by leaves and crowns. The emblem is located on one of the side walls of the cathedral, next to San Juan Street, in a pedestrian area full of Andalusian charm. Although its exact origin is poorly documented, today it is one of the most emblematic and photographed elements of Almería's old town. Its nighttime illumination makes it a particularly striking visual focal point during the blue hour or at night.

Photography Tips

Best time: At dusk or just after dark (between 8:00 and 9:30 PM), when the sky still has blue and pink tones and the artificial lighting highlights the sun.
Lighting: When the spotlight is turned on, the yellowish-green light from the projector creates a surreal effect; take advantage of this light to give it a mystical feel. Use long exposures if you need to balance the dark sky with the brightness of the shield.
Recommended angles: Take photos from the end of the street to create depth and guide the eye toward the shield. Also try close-ups to focus only on the detail of the sun.
Composition: Use vanishing lines with the cobblestone roadway and the buildings on the side. Include the nearby streetlight as a decorative element and light contrast.
Useful equipment: Wide-angle lens (16–35 mm) to capture the entire setting. A tripod is required for long exposures.

Travel Information

How to get there: Almería is accessible by train or bus from Madrid (~3 hours). From the station, walk about 15 minutes to the historic center. The cathedral is located in Plaza de la Constitución, near the port.
Parking: Public parking lots nearby include “Plaza de la Constitución Parking” and “San Miguel Parking.” There are also underground garages in the city center.
Access: Free and open to the public. The street is pedestrian-only and quiet at night — perfect for evening walks.
Opening hours: The emblem is illuminated year-round, though brightness may vary. Check local municipal lighting schedules if visiting off-season.
