Spain Puente del Real (Royal Bridge) in Valencia

I stand on the old course of the Turia and link the historic centre with the Jardines del Real (Viveros) and the Turia Gardens. You reach it easily from the Serranos Towers or the Fine Arts Museum; cyclists and walkers stream over it all day because the green ribbon of the park flows right underneath.

I carry centuries of traffic and stories. Valencia builds and rebuilds me after major floods, and I survive as a marker of how the city tames the river. After the great mid-twentieth-century flood, the river moves to a new channel and the former bed becomes today’s park, so I shift from being a busy river crossing to a scenic promenade.

I show off sober Valencian stonework. Broad ashlar blocks form slightly pointed arches; triangular cutwaters break the current and now cast handsome shadows; simple balustrades run the length. At my city-side pylons, I lift two canopied statues—St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Vincent Mártir—like sentries under tiled baldachins. Slender lanterns line the deck and give me an elegant profile after dark.

I reward photographers. You frame mirror-perfect reflections in the calm pools of the Turia Gardens. At golden hour, warm limestone glows and the arches draw clean leading lines across the frame. From below, you use the cutwaters to anchor compositions; from above, you catch the statues against deep blue sky. Night shoots work too: long exposures smooth the water and trace light around the lamps. For context, step back to include palms or the museum façade; for detail, move in on the carvings and roof tiles of the baldachins.

Shoot Puente del Real at golden hour when warm light sculpts the arches and palms, or at blue hour for lamp-lit long exposures. Work low at water level to mirror the arches; step back into the Turia park to frame with palm fronds; climb onto the deck to isolate the two canopied saints against clean sky. Compose with the cutwaters as leading lines and play symmetry by aligning an arch with its reflection to form an ellipse. Use 24–35 mm for scenes or 50–85 mm to compress statues and lamps; aim for f/8–f/11 at base ISO on a tripod. Add a circular polariser to tame glare on stone but ease off to keep reflections; use a 6–10-stop ND for silky water. Keep tripod feet off slick tiles, watch cyclists, and grab one classic symmetry shot plus one tight detail of tilework or shadow for variety.

On foot

From Torres de Serranos: walk 8–10 minutes east along the park’s upper path; the bridge is the next big stone span.

From Valencia Cathedral/Plaza de la Reina: head northeast 12–15 minutes toward the riverbed and follow signs to “Jardines del Real / Viveros.”

Metro

Ride to Alameda station (Lines 3/5/7/9). Exit toward the Turia Garden and walk 5–7 minutes west along the riverbed to the bridge.

Colón station is another option; it’s ~12 minutes on foot.

Bus

Any EMT bus stopping near Museu de Belles Arts or Jardines del Real (Viveros) places you within a 2–5 minute walk. Check the EMT app for the closest line from your start point.

Bike/Scooter

The Turia Garden cycle path runs directly under the bridge. Use Valenbisi docking stations around Viveros or Alameda and roll right in.

Taxi/Car

Set destination to “Puente del Real, Valencia” or “Museu de Belles Arts.” Drop-off works best on the city-centre side; street parking is limited—use nearby car parks around Alameda.

Accessibility: gentle ramps from the Turia Garden bring you up to bridge level; the deck is flat and paved.
