Spain Catoira Marshes – Ulla River Estuary

The Catoira marshes are located where the Ulla River begins to merge with the Ría de Arousa. At ground level, the area can look like an extensive field of reeds and wetland vegetation, but from the air an intricate network of tidal channels appears, winding and branching through the marsh like a miniature river system.

The combination of green and golden vegetation, dark water and sinuous channels creates particularly graphic and almost abstract compositions from above. The nearby Torres de Oeste and the replica Viking boats also make this an interesting historical and photographic area.

The marsh is especially interesting for drone photography. Flying vertically above the wetland reveals patterns and channels that are almost impossible to appreciate from ground level. A top-down perspective works particularly well, and stitching several images into a vertical panorama allows you to follow the course of the channels from the inner marsh towards the open water.

Low or moderate sunlight can enhance the texture of the vegetation, while overcast conditions produce softer colors and reduce reflections on the water. Watch for herons flying low over the channels, which can provide a useful sense of scale

To stay within the 120-metre altitude limit while capturing a wider view, it is better to shoot a multi-image panorama and stitch the photographs together in post-processing.
