The Puente de San Martín is one of Toledo’s most impressive medieval landmarks, crossing the Tagus River on the western side of the historic city. Dating largely from the late Middle Ages, the fortified bridge is characterized by its five arches and defensive towers.

This particular composition uses the stone archway at the city-side entrance as a natural frame, looking along the bridge toward Toledo. The combination of the dark medieval stonework, the symmetrical bridge, and the historic architecture in the background creates plenty of depth.

Photography Tips

I took this photo during sunrise / shortly afterward, when the low morning sun entered the archway from the side. This is a particularly nice time for this composition because the warm light catches parts of the stone walls and bridge while the tower's interior remains dark.

Expose for the bright exterior and allow the archway to fall into shadow to emphasize the natural frame. Including a person walking across the bridge also works extremely well for scale and gives the image a stronger focal point.

A wide to standard focal length around 24–50 mm works well here. Try standing further inside the tower rather than directly underneath the opening—the extra darkness around the edges makes the framing much stronger.

Travel Information

San Martin's Bridge sits on the western edge of Toledo's historic center and is easy to reach on foot while exploring the old town. The bridge has free public access, so arriving around sunrise is straightforward and means you'll encounter far fewer visitors than later in the day.

For this exact composition, walk onto the bridge from the outer/western side toward Toledo and photograph through the fortified archway toward the city. It's an easy spot to combine with a sunrise walk through Toledo before the historic center gets busy.
