Spain Calo des Calders

A small islet off the northwest coast of Ibiza. Perfect for summer sunsets. The access road is difficult for cars; to reach the coast, start from the right side of the small parking area (maximum 8 cars) and follow a fairly well-marked path toward the cliff. Keep a ruin on your left and continue until you find another path on the right that descends the cliff face—exercise caution, as the area becomes slippery when it rains.

Use a tripod, ND filters, and focal lengths between 14mm and 35mm, as well as a remote shutter release if your camera doesn't have one built-in. There are plenty of opportunities for different shots, though you need to be particularly careful of holes and rocks. You can also take shots from above without having to climb down the cliff. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear.

Take the EI-300 road towards Sant Joan de Labritja / Portinatx. Before entering the village of Sant Joan de Labritja, take the turnoff towards Portinatx (just past the Samarkanda restaurant). Follow this road until you reach another turnoff to the left, opposite Valley Club Ibiza Agroturismo, heading towards Es Calo d'Illa; this is a country road that is not in good condition. After passing Can Joani, a dirt track begins about one kilometer further on; follow this track to the parking area, which tends to get quite full.
