Spain Bujaruelo

Bujaruelo combines the clear waters of the Ara River, woodland and steep mountain scenery in the Spanish Pyrenees, near Torla-Ordesa. Around San Nicolas de Bujaruelo, the medieval stone bridge provides a strong focal point, while the river offers quieter compositions with boulders, pools and small rapids. Autumn brings yellow and orange foliage, and the surrounding cliffs can catch warm light while the valley remains in shade. It is a rewarding area for landscape photography and walks beside the river, next to Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park.

Photography Tips

Explore both sides of the Ara River and try different viewpoints around the medieval bridge. A wide-angle lens works well for the bridge, river and foreground rocks; a telephoto helps isolate sunlit cliffs and patches of autumn colour. Soft light is useful for woodland and water, while early or late light can add warmth to the upper slopes. Use a tripod and experiment with shutter speeds: around 1/4 to 1 second can retain movement in the rapids without losing all the texture. A polarising filter can reduce reflections on wet rocks and water, but adjust it carefully to keep some depth in the pools. Watch for moving leaves during longer exposures and use a faster frame if needed.

Travel Information

From Torla-Ordesa, follow the road towards Ordesa to Puente de los Navarros, then take the signed turn towards Bujaruelo and San Nicolas de Bujaruelo. Follow the valley access road to the parking area near the refuge and meadow. The medieval bridge and nearby river viewpoints are a short walk from there; other compositions require following the riverside paths. Check local access information before travelling, as road works, weather and seasonal conditions can affect the approach. Wear walking shoes with good grip: riverbank rocks can be slippery, especially in autumn. Keep to established paths and leave access to the bridge clear for other visitors.
