Sweden Storforsen pite river, Norrbotten
Notice: the waterfall can be seen from the hotel (location as marked) but is a better experienced (and photographed) close-up. There is another parking ca. 2km to the southwest, just follow the signs.
Storforsen, a rapid in the Pite River in Swedish Norrbottens län is located approximately 38 km northwest of Älvsbyn. With an average flow of 250 m3/s, the rapids are one of the biggest in Europe. The rapids stretch over a distance of 5 km in which it drops 82 meters 60 of which are a single waterfall. (from Wikipedia)
The 'Great Rapids' are, according to my guidebook, "A natural experience of indescribable force that you will never forget". They are bordered by dams on the left and right so that they do not flood a wide area.
They used to do that in the past (and probably still do at times now). Anyway, on the northern bank is an extensive nature reserve with blank-washed rock plateaus and canyons. Several forked streams flow over smaller waterfalls. The whole area is well-developed with hiking trails, boardwalks and bridges. Here it is easy to see the effect of the water's ferocity.
