Switzerland Cathédrale de Lausanne

The Cathedral of Lausanne rises above the city, overlooking Lake Geneva and the surrounding Alps. Built in the Gothic style, it begins construction in the late 12th century and is consecrated in 1275 in the presence of Pope Gregory X and Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg. Its architecture reflects the influence of northern France, with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and an impressive rose window that depicts scenes of creation and the seasons.

Inside, slender columns guide the eye upward to the vaulted ceiling, while sculpted portals on the exterior illustrate biblical narratives. The painted polychrome decorations, rediscovered during restorations, reveal how vibrant the medieval church once appeared. The cathedral also hosts Switzerland’s last remaining night watchman, who still calls out the hours from the belfry each night.

As both a religious and cultural landmark, the Cathedral of Lausanne stands as a masterpiece of medieval architecture and a symbol of the city’s historical significance.
