Syrian Arab Republic Krak des Chevaliers, Syria
Krak des Chevaliers, located in western Syria, was considered one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture. Originally a fortress of the Emir of Homs in the early 11th century, it was expanded and transformed by the Knights Hospitaller after 1142 into a formidable stronghold of the Crusader states. Its concentric design, with an inner fortress encircled by massive outer walls and towers, demonstrated advanced defensive strategies of the time. Capable of housing thousands of soldiers and sustaining long sieges, the castle controlled strategic routes between the coast and inland Syria. Praised by contemporaries and modern historians alike, Krak des Chevaliers stood as a symbol of Crusader power and remains one of the most imposing castles of the medieval Mediterranean world.
