Arwad is a small island just off the Syrian coast, opposite the city of Tartus. It is considered the only inhabited island in Syria and has been settled for thousands of years. In antiquity it was known as Arados or Arvad, a powerful Phoenician city-state whose sailors traded and fought across the eastern Mediterranean. Later it passed through Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Crusader hands, which left layers of fortifications and stonework around the shoreline. Today the island is densely built, with houses and apartment blocks crowding close together, wrapped by a ring of old defensive walls and a busy little fishing harbour. Narrow alleys thread through the village, opening suddenly onto the sea, rooftop terraces and small squares where daily life unfolds at a relaxed island rhythm.

For photographers, Arwad offers a compact but rich mix of subjects. The waterfront is full of colour: fishing boats rocking in the water, piles of nets, buoys and ropes, and the warm tones of weathered stone along the quay. From the edges of the island, there are wide views over the Mediterranean and back towards the mainland and the skyline of Tartus. Inside the village, tight alleys create strong perspective lines and alternating bands of light and shade. Old masonry, arches and fragments of fortifications blend with more recent concrete buildings, giving plenty of textures and contrasts. At sunrise and sunset the low light catches the stone walls and the boats, while the sea turns from deep blue to gold and then to soft pastel tones, making the small island feel much larger than it is.

Photography Tips

A few habits help photographers make the most of Arwad. Walking slowly and circling the island on foot allows the harbour, the walls and the village interior to be seen under different angles and light. Early morning is ideal for calm scenes in the harbour and for meeting fishermen preparing their boats; late afternoon and evening are better for warm light and silhouettes against the sea. A moderate wide-angle lens works well in the narrow streets and for showing boats against the backdrop of the island, while a short telephoto helps isolate details such as nets, windows, doorways and sections of the old walls. Including people in the frame gives a sense of scale and of everyday life, but it is respectful to ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in a small community. Modest clothing and a discreet attitude make it easier to move around and take photographs without disturbing anyone. Strong midday sun can be used creatively by embracing deep shadows and high contrast, or avoided by using shaded alleys and doorways as natural softboxes.

Travel Information

Reaching Arwad typically involves travelling first to Tartus on the Syrian coast, then taking a small passenger boat to the island. The crossing is short and usually follows a regular rhythm during the day, with boats shuttling between the harbour in Tartus and the quay on Arwad. The island itself is car-free, so everything is explored on foot once you arrive. Because Syria has experienced periods of instability and access rules can change, it is important to check current travel advice, visa requirements and local regulations well in advance, and to follow guidance from local authorities when organising any visit.
