Miriakamba Hut is the first overnight stop on the Mount Meru trek, beautifully situated in a grassy clearing surrounded by lush montane forest. The location offers wonderful views across the surrounding plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro, while colobus monkeys and colourful forest birds make the area particularly interesting for wildlife lovers.

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 metres above sea level, and offers one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in East Africa. The climb takes you through several distinct vegetation zones, beginning in lush montane forest filled with ancient trees, moss and wildlife before opening up into heathland and dramatic alpine landscapes. Along the way, you can encounter giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species, particularly on the lower slopes. Higher up, the views become increasingly spectacular, with steep volcanic ridges, the impressive crater and the dramatic Ash Cone dominating the landscape. On a clear morning, the summit rewards you with breathtaking views across the surrounding plains and towards Mount Kilimanjaro, often floating above a sea of clouds.

Photography Tips

Use the last light of the day for nice sun rays which are coming from the right side in your framing.

From the terraces, you have a beautiful view to Mt. Kilimanjaro. It's a perfect place for sunrise and sunset shots. Use your tripod.
