The archaeological site of Thugga/Dougga in Tunisia, situated on a hill, has a history dating back over six centuries. Initially the capital of the Numidian kingdom, it thrived under Roman rule but declined later. The site covers 75 ha and showcases a blend of Numidian, Punic, Hellenistic, and Roman cultures. Dougga is considered the best-preserved Africo-Roman town, providing insight into daily life in antiquity. The site's significance lies in its indigenous city layout adapting to Roman planning. The presence of two distinct communities, indigenous and Roman settlers, coexisting is noteworthy. Dougga boasts well-preserved Roman and pre-Roman ruins, offering a rare glimpse into provincial Roman life. The site's integrity and authenticity are high, with minimal restoration impact, and it is legally protected under heritage laws. A Protection and Enhancement Plan ensures careful management to preserve the archaeological site and its surroundings.
