The River Wharfe, known as the Queen of Yorkshire’s rivers is compressed into a narrow channel only 30 feet across. It’s a spectacular sight, particularly after a period of rain.

Photography Tips

Be very careful here as falling in is highly likely to be fatal. There are several viewpoints from the edge of The Strid, looking both up and down stream. The contrast between the green mosses on the rocks and autumn colours can be particularly pleasing. Mist makes a pleasant addition, but is rare. Early morning or late afternoon are nice, with sunlight lighting the tree canopy. It also works on an overcast day. Sadly the view down stream from the outlet has been ruined by the owning Estate’s decision to fell trees on the right hand bank. Nevertheless there are plenty compositions to be found along the length of The Strid.

A wide angle lens is a must here, as is the use of a tripod. An ND filter and polariser are also useful.

Travel Information

The woodland is owned by the Bolton Abbey Estate. They provide two car parks, but the fee is for the whole day, so best to make a day of it, and also visit nearby Bolton Abbey.
