United Kingdom Botallack Mine
The Botallack Mine is located near Sant Just in Cornwall, England. The tin mine was built directly onto the cliffs of Cape Cornwall. Its tunnels extend over a mile below the Atlantic Ocean. Tin mining first took place here in the 17th century. The mine remained active until 1895. Several attempts to reopen it failed, and the site was finally abandoned in 1914. All that remains of the mine today are the ruins of several buildings, a headframe, chimneys, and the distinctive Crown Engine Houses, which were built directly into the cliffs.
