Rydal Cave is a large, man-made cavern located near Rydal Water, in England’s Lake District, close to the village of Rydal between Ambleside and Grasmere.

it was originally a quarry for slate during the 19th century. The cave was abandoned when quarrying ceased, and it gradually filled with shallow water.

Photography Tips

Bring a tripod and some patience, as there are quite a lot of tourists. Use the reflection and consider putting a person in the frame.

Travel Information

Parking is a problem. I marked the spot where parking was possible. The church asks for a contribution, though.

From there it is a 1.3km walk. Parts of it are uphill and quite a lot of it is offroad.
