United Kingdom Box Hill
Box Hill is one of Surrey’s most breathtaking vantage points — a place where the countryside meets the stars. On clear nights, the view opens to a vast horizon filled with shimmering lights from Dorking and beyond, while the moon and constellations rise quietly above the valley. During Bonfire Night, the soft glow of firework smoke mixes with natural mist and moonlight, creating a surreal landscape of smoke, stars, colours and silhouettes. It’s a location that captures both serenity and spectacle — a reminder of how connected we are to the world above and below.
Photography Tips
For beginners, arrive before dark to find your composition safely and confidently. A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures — aim for 10–20 seconds at ISO 800–1600, f/2.8–4 depending on your lens. Use manual focus on a bright star or distant light to ensure sharpness, and try capturing the moonlight through the trees for added texture. On clear nights, you may even catch satellites or the ISS crossing the frame — use longer exposures or stack images for a more ethereal effect. Bring a remote shutter or use the camera’s timer to avoid vibration blur.
Travel Information
Box Hill is located near Dorking, Surrey, easily accessible from the A24. Parking is available at the Box Hill National Trust car park (KT20 7LB), just a short walk from the viewpoint. The area is well-signposted, and the best photography spots are near the Salomons Memorial Viewpoint. For night shoots, bring a headlamp and warm layers — it can get cold and dark quickly.
