Donnington Castle is a stunning medieval ruin overlooking the Berkshire countryside, and at night it becomes an incredible backdrop for astrophotography. Its twin towers frame the sky beautifully, and the low light pollution around the site makes it a great place to capture the Milky Way, constellations, or long-exposure star trails. If you’re looking for a spot that blends dramatic history with a quiet, atmospheric night sky, Donnington Castle is hard to beat.

Arrive before dark to scout your composition — placing the castle against the open sky creates a powerful silhouette. Use a wide-angle lens, manual focus, and start with settings around ISO 1600–3200, 20–25 sec, and f/2.8–4, depending on your lens. A tripod is essential, and consider taking a low-powered headlamp so you can adjust settings without disturbing your night vision.

Donnington Castle is located just north of Newbury and is easy to reach by car. There is free parking at the bottom of the hill, with a short uphill walk to the castle itself. The grounds are open and accessible year-round, but they get very dark at night, so bring suitable footwear and a torch.
