Photography Tips

Visit the region during summertime. Explore maps and look up all the available riverside banks.

I say this because the Norfolk Broads are vast in size and heavily overgrown with reeds.

Therefore don’t just go and expect the best. Research is key. Wintertime is equally good because you’ve crazy views of fog wafting over lone boats, around our Norfolk mills and countryside.

I also experiment with LEE fog and mist filters. These are excellent tools for increasing depth and story in foggy shots.

Lens wise, I prefer a 24-105 Sony G Lens, 200mm and my favourite 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7. The 24-105 and 16-300 are my all time favourite lenses.

The 16-300 is so underrated. I’ve used it on aged Sony A7s and the 7ii and a9 and found it works perfectly providing incredible in-depth, dramatic and crisp images.

If I were to choose just one to take it would be the 16-300 which is ideal for water shots, scapes ans drama.

Tripods are essential here but not a necessity. Moreover, CPL and ND filters. I use a 0.3-0.6.

The coordinates do not make sense at all! the windmill is to the left of your spot while the river is to the right of the spot. How did the river get in between?

It’s the location not the mill. The mill in the image isn’t Thurne but st Bennett’s. Thurne milll is to the right. This area is commonly known as Thurne mill because it’s only a few meters away from the mill.

Oh, I thought the mill was to the left. Thanks!

What picture are you referring to? Mine or the other contributor? Mine with the boat is Thurne of which the Thurneill is on the right of me and St Bennett’s is facing me near the boat.

This site is soooooo confusing!!! if you ADD an image to an existing one, then all your description will disappear and the first post will get the description and the coordinates. That's why I never wanted to post an image as ADD but rather as a separate one. Can you please write here YOUR coordinates? Many thanks for pointing out that the image with the boat was yours

It is confusing yes. If you look me up on Facebook you’ll find the photo with the exact grid reference for each photo shot. This is Thurne. Thurne mill is to the right. St Bennett’s opposite. So this other photo was taken in pretty much the same location as mine be it a few meters here and there. My Facebook is Jon Williamson.

Hey to both of you! :-) That's why you should only ADD a photo of the position is identical or if it doesn't matter if you stood a bit further to the left or right. In this case it makes all the difference on which river side you were or which windmill it is. So if you ADD a photo to an existing spot that isn't exactly the same, the description also doesn't make sense. If it's identical, it usually makes sense or the description needs to be updated to a generic one (not "I used a 70-300" but "A zoom lense like 70-300 is helpful at this spot to photograph the boats with the windmill in the background"). I wonder if you mean "alll your description will disappear" is because you added a photo to a spot, Alona. That's intentional and why the duplicate check comes before the content so that you don't have to enter any content if you recognized that the spot exists already. And if it's a different spot, you simply create a new one. I would love to hear more about that though because I plan to rework the uploader and make this easier to understand as well. That's my bad and I hope my thoughts make sense.

So kind of you Manuel to address this issue! As I am now particularly interested in S. Moravia, I have gone through quite a few spots there but some are all bundled up under the first person who posted. I am particularly interested in the comments off all those who were there, not only the first one. Each one's experience is different. So in that particular situation of S. Moravia, some images have been taken during sunrise, others at sunset and they are obviously the same subject but different point of view (which you cannot see). I would much much prefer to delete altogether the ADD and let each and every contributor tell his own story, suggestions and coordinates. You Manuel have done a tremendous work right from the start to get the perfection you see fit and I use this site quite often. However, if a contributor does not print his name on the image, the viewer will immediately attribute it to the first one who posted. That's a great pity! so it happens that when someone has a question or a remark on the image, someone else is answering thinking he is addressed. I am looking forward to seeing your rework and I can assure you, even as the site is, I have lots of pleasure using it!

I sent you an email to make it easier to write about such a broad topic :-)
