United Kingdom Cley Mill on the Norfolk Coast Path.

This spot is on the Norfolk coast located in Holt. The mill is known as Cley or Cly Mill and is quite famous due to its owners and history. Today it’s a luxury hotel and remains a picturesque place to shoot sunsets, sunrises, Astro and story telling shots, not forgetting the murmuring of the starlings. The location of this shot is just adjacent to the mill facing it. The best spot to be at sunset but not during daytime with no cloud.

There’s several decent locations to shoot from. However the best I find are to the right of the mill on the Norfolk coast path as if heading down to the coast. Ideally you need to venture out on a well lit day with cloud. Cloud is your friend here due to limited shooting spots. I use the cloud as filters because you’re often shooting directly into the sun. Hence a sunny but cloudy day is ideal.

There are no trains that run to the mill and bus services are limited in places. Take the car and park near to the mill. Alternatively you can take the train from Norwich to Sheringham then bike the 7.8 miles to Cley.

The coastal hopper bus runs from Sheringham to Holt but, if you want to spend the evening at Cley shooting into the sunset hours, then either take a tent and camp or leave earlier. The coastal hopper last service is around 18:00-18:30. Things may have changed since my visit. Your best option is to camp near to the dunes. Stay clear of the beach. Keep warm even in the summer.
