United Kingdom Middle Black Clough Waterfall
Middle Black Clough Waterfall is a hidden gem tucked away in a steep, rocky clough in the Dark Peak. The waterfall cascades down moss-covered gritstone steps into a small plunge pool, surrounded by ferns, trees, and damp rock walls that give the area a secluded, almost woodland feel. It’s especially atmospheric after rainfall when the flow increases and the greens really come alive. A great location for intimate landscape and long-exposure waterfall photography away from the busier Peak District spots.
Photography Tips
Overcast days are ideal, providing soft, even light that brings out the mossy textures without harsh contrast. A tripod is essential for long exposures to smooth the water, and a wide-angle lens works well to capture the full cascade and surrounding rock walls. Watch for wet, reflective rocks in the foreground, and consider a polarising filter to reduce glare and deepen greens.
Travel Information
Middle Black Clough is located near Hayfield in the Peak District and is best accessed on foot via public footpaths from the village. There is parking available in Hayfield, with a scenic walk following the Clough upstream to reach the waterfall. The paths can be steep, muddy, and slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Allow extra time after wet weather, as water levels and conditions can change quickly.
