United Kingdom Lincoln Castle Prison

In the Victorian era, a prison was built in the grounds of the castle to house about 70 men, women and even children prisoners. the Justice Department realised that people sent to prison for relatively minor crimes were learning all sorts of nastiness from the old lags. They decided to keep prisoners separate to manage the problem.
The prison within chapel which inmates attended for an hour a day, probably to relieve boredom (Roman Catholics and sick people were excluded) shows the extent of the separation policy. To ensure they did not speak with other inmates during the service, each inmate was shut into a pen where he/she could only see the preacher.

Photography Tips

Go wide-angle and raise the ISOs a little, but, frankly, its more about quirky history than great photo locations.

Travel Information

The castle is a couple of minutes’ walks from Lincoln Cathedral. There is parking in the area, including around the entrance on the other side of the castle. There are two excellent pubs there: The Strugglers Inn is named because it used to be the location for public hangings before the prison was established. The Victoria is more local but has excellent beer.
