Lincoln’s High Bridge, AKA The Glory Hole, was originally opened in 1160, with some renovation in around 1902, although the timbers of the current building date from the 1500s, still making it one of England’s oldest stone bridges. The high street runs across it still, the shops are on one side only.

The narrowness of the glory hole limits the size of boats that can pass through it and has also contributed to local flooding. It was well-known as a collecting point for floating human bodies. It also had a reputation for being a place where bodies could be discretely dumped in the river, hence its earlier name The Murder Hole.

The river Witham flows between Boston and nearby Brayford Pool, where ships and barges used to load and unload Lincoln’s cargo. The water is, unfortunately, a distinct “American Flag Blue” which detracts somewhat.
