USA Steptoe Butte, Spokane, WA
Steptoe Butte, located in eastern Washington's Palouse region, is an isolated, solitary mountain rising dramatically above rolling wheatlands. Geologically, it's a classic example of a "steptoe"—an ancient, resistant core of Mesoproterozoic quartzite that withstood erosion, unlike the surrounding hills mantled by younger Pleistocene loess (wind-blown silt).
Photography Tips
The best moments to photograph this magnificent landscape are sunrise and sunset.
The butte, which is accessible via a spiral road leading to a 360-degree lookout, is a prime location for photographers who use the light of sunrise and sunset to sculpt the quilted fields into abstract patterns, utilizing both telephoto lenses for compression and wide-angle lenses for sweeping panoramas.
