the alternative wave which is much more easy to get to than "The Wave". It takes about an hour or so from Vegas and is a short walk from the parking. If you do it winter it feels like a stroll in the park in summer its really much harder (take lots of water with you) also look out for rattle snakes!

Photography Tips

The Fire Wave tilts toward the west, so the best lighting on it is in the late afternoon. Also, this site is tailor-made for wide-angle and super wide-angle lenses.

Travel Information

From downtown Las Vegas, take I-15 north about 30 mi/48 km and turn right (east) onto the Valley of Fire Scenic Byway. Then drive about 18 mi/29 km east to the park’s visitor center. From the visitor center, take Mouse’s Tank Road north about 4 mi/6.5 km to the two parking lots for the Fire Wave trail (one on each side of the road). The trailhead is at the parking lot on the east side of the road. The trail is about 1.5 mi/2.4 km out and back with about 250 ft/75 m of elevation change.

Because southern Nevada is desert, summertime temperatures can be unpleasant to very unpleasant (often well above 110°F/43°C). Early fall was a little warm, but not bad. Winter and spring should also be nice here. Regardless, bring water, use sunscreen, and wear a hat.
