USA View of Mt. Rushmore through Scovel Johnson Tunnel
- Please to see the GPS coordinates & weather for this photo spot
Look closely through the tunnel. This tunnel was engineered to give the traveler their first glimpse of Mount Rushmore as they travel the Iron Mountain Road to the national monument. The tunnel is named after Scovel Johnson, who built the Needles Highway and surveyed Iron Mountain Road.
Stop in the pull-off, just before the tunnel, as you are driving toward Mount Rushmore. Walk across the road and up the shallow embankment, to line up the shot through the tunnel and toward Mount Rushmore.
Travel the Iron Mountain Road to Mount Rushmore. For $6.99, purchase the Gypsy Guide for Badlands, Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Spearfish Canyon & Deadwood for IOS or Android. It works off of GPS location and is a step-by-step travel guide, which will guide you right to the spot to take this photo.
