USA Coyote Buttes South
An area arguably comparable to the more famous “Wave” and also requires a permit, however the permit is much easier to get because the drive to get there includes about 12 miles of extremely deep sand requiring 4WD.
Photography Tips
While it is illegal to camp inside the boundaries of Coyote Buttes South, camping is permitted just outside the boundary on the east side of Cottonwood Spring road. The 15-20 minute hike from the parking area makes this an excellent sunrise/sunset photo location.
Travel Information
Due to long stretches of extremely deep sand, a high clearance 4WD drive vehicle is absolutely necessary to get to the trailhead. The cost of a tow truck to get a vehicle unstuck ranges from $1000 to $1500 US. If you don’t have a 4WD vehicle it’s a good idea to hire a guide to drive and guide you there. You must first acquire the required permit for all members of your party.
