The short 2.5 mile R/T hike to Castner Ice Cave is beautiful. If there has been recent snowfall, it is highly recommended that you hire a guide as much for the trail as the cave. Heavy snowfall will obscure the trail making an accidental fall into Castner Creek a possibility. Deviating from the hard packed trail even a little bit can be dangerous.
