USA Chitina Bridge
Beyond Chitina, the McCarthy Road crosses the Copper River. Late spring and early summer, from the Chitina Bridge, you can watch a special Alaskan fishery against the spectacular backdrop of the mountain massif: Dipnetting. The dipnet, a large net attached to a pole, is pulled through the water of the river. In this way, salmon are caught on their way upstream to their spawning grounds. Only in Alaska is salmon fished in this way, according to strict rules. Only Alaskan residents are allowed to participate and only a few river areas are designated for this purpose. There are also time restrictions and the fishermen must have a licence. Whole families and large groups obviously fish together here.
