USA Kasilof Beach Dipnetting

Near Kasilof, in and at the mouth of the Kasilof River, in the early summer people are dipnetting. The dipnet, a large net attached to a pole, is pulled through the water of the river. In this way, salmon are caught on their way upstream to their spawning grounds. Only in Alaska is salmon fished in this way, according to strict rules. Only Alaskan residents are allowed to participate and only a few river areas are designated for this purpose. There are also time restrictions and the fishermen must have a licence. Whole families and large groups obviously fish together here.
The catch is pretty good. According to an information board, it is "Personal Use Fisheries", with which Alaskans stock up of sockeye salmon to provide them with nutricion throughout the winter.
