USA Ninilchik Russian Orthodox Church and cemetery
Russian fur traders had been present in Alaska since the late 18th century. The country became a colony of the Tsarist Empire until it was sold to the USA in 1867. At that time, the natives were missionised from Russia. This is why there are still Russian Orthodox parishes in Alaska. At Ninilchik, on the Kenai Peninsula, there is a pretty Orthodox church overlooking the coast of Cook Inlet. Particularly beautiful is the cemetery around the church, which is overgrown with wildflowers.
