In addition to the seemingly endless boreal forest, the landscape along the highway also has wild rivers and idyllic lakes to offer.

Travel Information

The Dalton Highway was originally called the ‘Haul Road’ because almost everything supporting oil development was ‘hauled‘ on reactor-trailer rigs to its final destination. In 1981, the state of Alaska named the highway after James W. Dalton. It was only open to commercial traffic. In 1994, general traffic was allowed as far as Deadhorse. Trucks still have priority today.
The potholes in the gravel sections are bad. But those in the tarmac sections are much worse, because they are not so rounded but have hard, sharp edges.
