Roll Dam Campground, located on the Upper West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine’s Penobscot River Corridor near Seboomook Lake, is a remote, first-come, first-serve campsite managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, offering a rustic base for paddlers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. Situated just 2.5 miles downstream from Seboomook Dam, it features four designated sites (including one group site) with basic amenities like fire pits and pit toilets, ideal for canoe or kayak trips along the 92-mile waterway known for moose sightings and Class III+ whitewater. Accessible via the Golden Road from Millinocket, the campground is best visited in late spring or early fall for mild weather and vibrant scenery, though a North Woods permit is required, and visitors should prepare for limited cell service and self-rescue scenarios. Its serene riverside setting and proximity to pristine lakes and forests make it a prime spot for photography, capturing the untouched beauty of Maine’s North Woods.

Photography Tips

An amazing and very isolated spot for stargazing and night photography, bring a fast, wide lens and a tripod.

Travel Information

The drive from Bangor, Maine, to Roll Dam Campground in the Penobscot River Corridor near Seboomook Lake via the Golden Road is approximately 120-125 miles and takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on road conditions and stops. Starting in Bangor, take I-95 North for about 60 miles to Exit 244 (Medway). From there, follow ME-11 North and ME-157 for roughly 20 miles to Millinocket. In Millinocket, turn onto the Golden Road, a well-maintained gravel logging road, and continue west for about 40-45 miles, passing landmarks like the Seboomook Dam, until you reach Roll Dam Campground. The Golden Road is scenic but remote, with potential for rough patches, loose gravel, and logging truck traffic, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended, and drivers should stay alert. Fuel up in Millinocket, as there are no gas stations beyond this point
