USA Harvard Glacier
This glacier is at the head of College Fjord and is surrounded by a dozen other glaciers.
Photography Tips
The secret to photographing glaciers calving huge chunks of glacial ice into the fjord is to closely focus on the glacier wall, constantly shifting your gaze from one end of the wall to the other for 10 minutes or so. Then turn your back on the glacier for five seconds and listen for the roar of ice crashing into the water behind you.
Travel Information
We took a boat tour out of Whittier, Alaska to get to this spot. If you are not lodging in Whittier the night before your tour, be sure to allow time to get through the 2.5 mile Long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel leading to Whittier. Travel through the tunnel is done on a regular schedule and costs $13 (US) for round trip passage (as of 8/18/2025).
