In 1923, a geologist declared that this landscape was like the surface of the moon as seen through a telescope. Today we know from astronauts that most lunar craters originate from meteorite impacts and are not volcanic. The "Craters of the Moon" are definitely of volcanic origin, but the name of the park is still the same: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.
Laidlaw Park Road leads deep into ancient lava fields of the park.
