USA Grassy Knob Tunnel – Blue Ridge Parkway
Grassy Knob Tunnel is one of the many iconic stone tunnels along the Blue Ridge Parkway, surrounded by vibrant foliage in autumn. The sweeping curve of the road creates a natural leading line, guiding the eye straight into the tunnel and making it a favorite subject for photographers chasing seasonal color.
Photography Tips
Best in mid to late October during peak fall foliage. A mid-range focal length (35–70mm) works perfectly to frame the road and tunnel while emphasizing the fall canopy. Shoot on overcast or drizzly days for rich, saturated colors and to reduce harsh shadows. A tripod can help with longer exposures if light is low under the tree cover.
Travel Information
Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 422.2 near Canton, North Carolina. There’s no official parking at the tunnel, but small pull-offs are available nearby. Use caution when shooting from the road, as traffic does pass through — mornings tend to be quieter with fewer cars.
