Probably the most famous and standard spot for all photographers who are coming to New York is this one with an amazing view over the East River towards the skyline of Manhattan with the Brooklyn Bridge coming from the left. It's a great place to meet other photographers and the stone steps are serving perfectly as a seat for a relaxed photography session.

The best time to be there is before sunset around September 11th, because that's usually the time when the city activates these two memorial lights called "Tribute in Light". This way the standard perspective gets an additional nice detail, but you have to be early! The last time I've been there we were about 100 photographers just at this spot. Normally there is enough space for everybody, but if you want the best view, you shouldn't be late!

Photography Tips

There are steps so that you can try out different heights and perspectives for your photo. In general, I would recommend pointing the lens horizontally towards the skyline, because otherwise, the buildings are not straight and you might need to fix this in post-production.

You can walk over the Brooklyn Bridge or use the subway to Brooklyn to get there with just a few additional minutes by foot.

Gorgeous photo, Manuel, and an excellent tip about going in September during memorial activities but I don't understand the "The best time to be there is before sunset around 11" ... what time is sunset and what time is it before?

Hey dear Alona, I guess I should explain it in other words. It's just important to be there during 11. September just before the sun settles. Sunset is around 7pm, so I would be there around 6pm, so that I would have enough time to find a good composition. Besides that, there will be quite a lot of local photographers, so depending on your spot you might need to be there even earlier to get a good spot. Did I explain it better this time? :-)

Ah now I understand. I changed that to "September 11th". "11. September" is the German way to write a date... sorry about that... ;-)

This photo is quite old, so I used my Canon 7D with a 17-50mm F2.8. For this photo, I was at 21mm / 25sec / F11 / ISO100, but keep in mind that the Canon doesn't have a fullframe sensor. And no worries about asking questions, always happy to help.

Ok, thank you so much, so it will be around 33mm for full frame. BTW, I see the cabin underneath the bridge, you have done a great job controlling the light - your photo really stands out :-)

That's a children's merry-go-round (such a beautiful place for something like that) and I guess I took multiple photos to prevent areas that are burned out, but I am not sure anymore. Thank you very much for all your feedback :-)

Yeah, it's definitely one of the most iconic photo spots in New York for this reason and I am pretty sure that you would enjoy this place too.
