Antarctica Whalers Bay Summit, Deception Island

Deception Island is a unique volcanic island in Antarctica, formed as a flooded caldera that ships can sail directly into. It’s famous for its black sand beaches, steaming geothermal areas, and abandoned whaling station remains at Whalers Bay.

To hike up the nearby volcano is absolutely stunning if the conditions allow it (high winds). You will get a good overview over the area.

A person for scale helps here in the right positioning. Give the person air to breath in your frame, thinking about the golden cut and the placement of the viewing direction of the person.

Travel there is only possible via expedition cruise, typically departing from Ushuaia and crossing the Drake Passage; landings depend heavily on weather and sea conditions. Visitors can walk among volcanic terrain, see wildlife like penguins and seals, and even experience warm water near the shore due to geothermal activity—though conditions are still harsh and highly unpredictable. To get up here, 250-300m in elevation need to be climbed on rocky, sandy ground.
