While there are no guarantees when photographing wildlife, you can be confident that you'll see at least one wombat at Ronnie Creek, Cradle Mountain.

Photography Tips

Boardwalks have been built in the area to protect the vegetation from tourists. The older wombats will confidently walk beside the boardwalk (or even on top of or underneath them). This photo was taken with a 24-70mm lens and the camera was resting on the ground. The wombat walked right up to the camera less than 30cm away.

The younger wombats are less confident and will usually be further away from the boardwalk/tourists. You will need a zoom lens to photograph them.

Wombats are generally out and about after dawn and close to dusk. The photo was taken in February (Summer) but I am fairly confident they can be found in that location at any time of the year.

Travel Information

If visiting Cradle Mountain during park hours you will need to catch a bus to Ronny Creek from the Visitors Centre at the park entrance. If visiting outside park hours you can drive to Ronnie Creek and park your car in the carpark.

Walk along the boardwalk that marks the start of the Overland Track and keep your eyes open for wombats (and possibly echidna and wallabies). You shouldn't have to walk far, just the few hundred metres from the carpark to bridge and back.
